Why does the US need a manned space station?

I know its a only a few billion and a drop in the bucket to most Americans but add it up to all the bucket drops in education, environment, ag subsidies, grants, etc. and you have a delluge. Plus, people become dependent on those drops. We have to stop doing things that jeopardize our kids future. Or shame on selfish us.
